LDK – Facilitating the decision-making process for Green Economy Transition financing
Case Study, by asprisonlinesolutions@gmail.com
LDK Consultants is a prominent engineering consulting group, which has completed over 2,500 sustainable development projects. The company provides integrated solutions in engineering, project management, energy, environment, and socio-economic development, among others.
Challenge:
As part of the project “Green Economy Transition (GET) Assessment for the Development of three industrial zones in Lebanon”, initiated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), LDK had to help the EBRD achieve its objectives in terms of determining which project components qualified for GET financing and ensuring that the project followed best environmental and social practices.
Solution:
Urban Camel undertook the evaluation of the socio-economic impact of the establishment of new industrial zones. Based on the master plan and a list of environmental activities we identified challenges and critical factors in each industrial zone and estimated the direct employment effect/opportunities. To help spot trends in climate change mitigation and adaptation over time in each industrial zone, we identified KPIs for different environmental categories including water, energy, material efficiency, sustainable planning and design, industrial symbiosis, biodiversity, and environmental benefits. Finally, we identified mitigation actions and eligible investment components for each of these.
We identified investment components that have a significant Green Economy Transition impact potential for EBRD and conducted research to identify international benchmarks and KPIs for evaluation.
Result:
Our work provided guidance on project components or environmental activities that qualify for GET based on the GET principles and criteria and facilitated the decision-making process for financing.
